HEALTHY HABITS SCHEME OF WORK FOR NURSERY ONE (FIRST TERM)

This Healthy Habits Scheme of Work for Nursery One (First Term) was prepared in accordance to the Lagos State Government Ministry of Education, Early Childhood Care Scheme and has been simplified in such a way that all teachers taking the class will be able easily understand and prepare their lesson plans with it. 

It comprises of the topics, teaching activities and suggested learning materials.

SUBJECT: HEALTHY HABITS - NURSERY ONE (1ST TERM)

WEEK ONE
• TOPIC: Disease / Illness
• CONTENTS/TEACHING ACTIVITIES:
i. Give simple meaning of disease.
ii. Give examples of some diseases common among children e.g. polio, cough, malaria, chicken pox, stooling, kwashiorkor etc.
• LEARNING MATERIALS: Poster/Pictures/Charts showing signs of childhood diseases and healthy children.


WEEK TWO
• TOPIC: Diseases: Causes
• CONTENTS/TEACHING ACTIVITIES:
i. List and discuss some causes of diseases and illnesses e.g. drinking dirty water, using dirty plates or cutlery to eat, picking food from the floor, living or sleeping in dirty room, stagnant water in the surroundings, littering of floor, roads and gutter with dirt.
ii. Discuss the implications of dirty habits to our health and environment.
• LEARNING MATERIALS: Poster/Charts showing different causes of diseases (as listed in the content)


WEEK THREE
• TOPIC: Diseases: Care
• CONTENTS/TEACHING ACTIVITIES:
i. List and discuss some care to be given to a pupil that is ill e.g. giving ORT/SS solution when necessary, give food, water, warmth, give first-aid treatment, refer to clinic.
• LEARNING MATERIALS: Poster/Charts/videos showing various ways of caring for the sick


WEEK FOUR
• TOPIC: Diseases: Prevention
• CONTENTS/TEACHING ACTIVITIES:
Teacher discusses with the children some preventive measures on childhood diseases eg. immunization, cleanliness, live in air and cool house, ORT/SS Solution, use of insecticide, use of treated mosquito nets, de-worming.
• LEARNING MATERIALS: Poster/Chart showing various preventive measures to avoid diseases


WEEK FIVE
• TOPIC: Immunization
• CONTENTS/TEACHING ACTIVITIES:
i. Use simple words to explain immunization to the pupils.
ii. Expose pupils to pictures/ photographs/posters/chats showing various vaccines e.g. BCG, vaccine against measles, polio; Vitamin A etc.
• LEARNING MATERIALS: Pictures/ Photographs/Posters/Charts showing various vaccines e.g. BCG, vaccine against measles, polio; Vitamin A etc.

WEEK SIX: MID TERM BREAK

WEEK SEVEN
• TOPIC: Health Habits: Good
• CONTENTS/TEACHING ACTIVITIES:
i. Discuss simple meaning of good health habits with the pupils.
ii. Mention some ways of maintaining good personal health e.g. eating balanced diet (good food), drinking clean water, play safely.

• LEARNING MATERIALS: Videos of Rhymes on Good Health Habits


WEEK EIGHT
• TOPIC: Health Habits: Bad
• CONTENTS/TEACHING ACTIVITIES:
Discuss simple meaning of bad health habits e.g. dirty nails, bushy hair, mouth odour, mucus in the nose, dirt in the eyes, smoking etc.
• LEARNING MATERIALS: Pictures/Posters/Charts showing various examples of bad health habits


WEEK NINE
• TOPIC: Safety Rules
• CONTENTS/TEACHING ACTIVITIES:
i. Discuss the meaning of safety rules
ii. Mention and discuss some safety rules a child needs to keep e.g. playing with electric sockets or wire, playing with naked fire, talking with strangers, flying kites on the road, rolling tyre or ball on the road, sitting in front of a car, crossing road alone etc.
• LEARNING MATERIALS: Videos of Rhymes on Safety Rules

WEEK 10 & 11: REVISION

WEEK 12 & 13: EXAMINATION
