This Basic Science and Technology scheme of work for Nursery One (First Term) was prepared in accordance to the Lagos State Government Ministry of Education, Early Childhood Care Scheme and has been simplified in such a way that all teachers taking the class will be able easily understand and prepare their lesson plans with it.
It comprises of the topics for the term, teaching activities and suggested learning materials.
WEEK ONE
• TOPIC: Safe Environment - Home• CONTENTS/TEACHING ACTIVITIES:
i. Describe safe environment to children.
ii. Caregiver/teacher helps the child to recognize safe environment.
ii. Child learns to explore his/her environment safely.
• LEARNING MATERIALS: Posters/Charts showing various harmful tools in the home that the children should not go close to, e.g. blade, knife, pins, needles, fire, kerosene, gas, etc.
WEEK TWO
• TOPIC: Safe Environment - School
• CONTENTS/TEACHING ACTIVITIES:
i. dramatize safe environment with child's active participation.
ii. Discuss safe school environment with child.
• LEARNING MATERIALS: Posters/Charts showing various harmful tools in the school that the children should not go close to
WEEK THREE
• TOPIC: Health and Safety - Home
• CONTENTS/TEACHING ACTIVITIES:
i. Give simple meaning of health.
ii. Give simple meaning of safety.
iii. Discuss some safety measures at home with child e.g. mopping of wet floor, proper disposal of refuse etc.
• LEARNING MATERIALS: Posters, charts, newspaper cuttings, pictures on dangerous objects.
WEEK FOUR
• TOPIC: Health and Safety - School
• CONTENTS/TEACHING ACTIVITIES:
i. Guide child on how to prevent dangerous actions that can harm him/her in the school.
ii. Discuss some safety measures to take in some areas in the school e.g. play-ground, lobby, stairways etc.
• LEARNING MATERIALS: Videos of Rhymes on Safely in the school.
WEEK FIVE
• TOPIC: Health and Safety - Road
• CONTENTS/TEACHING ACTIVITIES:
i. Guide the child to identify some roads in the community.
ii. Give simple meaning of road
iii. Explain the use of road.
• LEARNING MATERIALS: Songs on the safety tips on how to use the road.
WEEK SIX: MID TERM BREAK
WEEK SEVEN
• TOPIC: Colours
• CONTENTS/TEACHING ACTIVITIES:
i. Give simple meaning of colour.
ii. Sing songs or recite rhymes on colour.
iii. Guide pupils on colour identification- red, blue, yellow and green.
• LEARNING MATERIALS: Posters/Charts of various colours
WEEK EIGHT
• TOPIC: Road Signs - Traffic Light
• CONTENTS/TEACHING ACTIVITIES:
i. Give simple meaning of traffic light with the use of songs or rhymes to pupils.
ii. Explain the simple function of traffic light with the use of chart for illustration.
iii. State what each colour of the traffic light denotes.
• LEARNING MATERIALS: Posters/Charts of Traffic Lights and what they stand for/represent
WEEK NINE
• TOPIC: Road Signs - Zebra Crossing Lines
• CONTENTS/TEACHING ACTIVITIES:
i. Teacher sings songs or recites rhymes on zebra crossing to pupils.
ii. Guide the pupils on how to identify zebra crossing lines and the colours on the road.
WEEK 10 & 11: REVISION
WEEK 12 & 13: EXAMINATION
